On March 10, 2011, Heard County Fire Chief Scott Blue will take
possession of a one and half ton piece of steel which was part of the World
Trade Center. The artifact from one of the deadliest terrorist attacks on
American soil is being obtained to be the center piece of a proposed Heard
County Public Safety Monument. The new memorial will be located at the
Heard County Public Safety Complex located on Georgia Hwy. 100. Chief
Blue will accept the steel from the Port Authority of New York and New
Jersey at JFK airport in New York. The artifact will then be brought to
Franklin arriving sometime Friday evening. The Heard County Sheriff’s
Office will meet the artifact and escort the steel to the Franklin Square
where residents will be allowed to view this important piece of history. The
steel will then be transported to the Public Safety Complex to be secured
until the monument is ready. It is hoped that the monument can be
completed to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the attacks on
September 11, 2011.
Designs for the new memorial are being finalized by a committee which
includes Fire Chief Scott Blue, Sheriff Ross Henry, and Police Chief Kevin
Hannah. In addition Heard County Commission Chair June Jackson and
Heard County District 5 Commissioner Sandi Allen have been heavily
involved in the project along with Beth Burgoon and the Heard County Art
Council. Plans for the monument include a design which will be a reminder
of the lives that were lost that day and honor the public safety professionals
who gave their lives to save thousands more that day. In addition the
monument will be a memorial to the public safety professionals of Heard
County who continue to serve the citizens of Heard County.
Although the exact time the artifact will arrive in Heard County is not known
due to the distance it will have to travel, efforts will be made to keep
citizens informed on many of the county websites and social media sites.
The committee is hoping to pay for the cost of the monument through
donations and fund-raising. One the fund-raisers will be the selling of
engraved bricks to be located on the memorial site. If you would like to
volunteer or donate funds to help in this project please contact Heard
County Fire & Emergency Services at 706-675-6186 or contact Chief Blue
at chiefblue@heardfire.com.
