Upon recommendation by the Planning & Zoning Board, the Franklin City Council has reappointed Sarah
Almond and Linda Phillips to the Zoning Board for another four-year term, along with newly appointed
served the two prior years as Chairperson, and was again reelected by the board as Chairperson, along
with Jim Kuchenbaker as Co-Chair for 2011.
Currently the Franklin Zoning Board, along local business owners, local government and community
members, are working hard on implementation of Habitat for Humanity for Heard County.
What is Habitat for Humanity? It is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry dedicated to
eliminating poverty housing and homelessness from the world. Habitat is dedicated to the ideal that all
people deserve decent place to live. Since 1990, Troup/Chambers Habitat’s mission is to provide
decent housing to people in need. Habitat has also expanded to Randolph County, Alabama and is
excited to announce it’s intent to continue expansion of it’s mission to include the Heard County.
How does it work? Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials,
Habitat builds and renovates simple, decent houses with partner families in need of shelter. Habitat
houses are sold to the families at no profit, financed with affordable loans. The homeowner’s monthly
mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.
Homeowners are chosen on the basis of need, willingness to partner and ability to repay the loan.
How can you help? Habitat need people to help build, to serve on committees and to spread the word
about Habitat’s work and the desperate need for affordable housing. To learn more about Habitat for
Humanity visit the website, www.habitat.org or call Franklin City Hall (706)675-6623 if you would like to
volunteer to help in any capacity, with this most needed endeavor. Heard County needs YOU!
